IELTS model answer about a shorter work week (IELTS 19 book)

I wrote this model answer based on a topic from the new Cambridge IELTS 19 book. Always use authentic material when you are practicing for IELTS. This will prepare you for the real exam much better than some of the fake writing tasks online.

Some people struggle with relevant ideas for IELTS essay tasks. One way to get ideas for your essays is to regularly read articles and news stories about topics that often appear in IELTS writing such as work, health, technology, education, society, family, environment, crime, and so on.

Planning is important. Take 10 minutes to plan your essay, keep it concise and specific and avoid convoluted flowery vocabulary as this may lower your score. See this link about keeping it simple.

It is argued that workers ought to have longer weekends and work fewer days during the week. I agree with this because it would be beneficial to employees’ motivation and job satisfaction. Moreover, this would be a logical recruiting policy to attract new staff.

I believe a shorter workday week would improve job satisfaction and boost productivity. This is because people are stressed and burnt out from working long hours, and some companies ask their staff to come in on weekends to meet deadlines. If a new law was implemented to have a four-day work week, it would give staff more time to relax and thus improve their mental health and motivation. For instance, in recent trials in the UK, some companies instituted shorter workweeks to get employees to be more productive. Findings showed that this had a dramatic impact on worker’s attitudes to their jobs, fewer sick days, and they got more done.

Another reason for my view is that this would attract new workers because it would entice them to join a company that would allow them to have a better work-life balance. That is to say, new recruits are more inclined to prioritise their well-being and longer weekends would give them more freedom to pursue their interests. For example, there is evidence to suggest that since the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more workers are placing job satisfaction above a high salary, and many of them are looking to work in firms that have flexible work hours with more time off. Although some would argue against this policy, I firmly believe that longer weekends would boost morale among the workforce.

In conclusion, I would argue that a shorter workweek would greatly benefit staff morale, and result in better productivity. This would also be an effective recruitment policy to lure new talent.

Notes on repetition: I repeated the words ‘workers’ and ‘staff’ four times. This is natural and ok but be careful of overdoing repetition.
